The Indonesian branch of Yamaha announces officially that the launch date for the anticipated YZF-R25 motorcycle has been set for 20 May.
However the new small-displacement sport bike machine is still veiled in mystery, especially as recent rumors say that it could in fact be a single-cylinder machine, instead of being powered by the anticipated parallel-twin engine. Frankly, the displacement figure leaves quite a lot of room for both possibilities, as either options could be considered. Some say that being a bike destined for the Asian markets, the lower price could be one of the strong points in Yamaha’s (presumed) choice for a thumper design.
A parallel twin engine could be used for the bike version the European and North American markets will see, as the R3 moniker seems to be the name the bigger-displacement the new YZF will be marketed under in these areas.
It also looks more and more like the M1-lookalike small bike Yamaha and Valentino Rossi introduced last year in November was only a concept, and no production motorcycle will share the design with the MotoGP prototype, which is a terrible shame. Anyway, in case the new R25 is delivering the rumored 35-37 horsepower, and Yamaha is selling it for the right price, there might be some trouble coming Ninja 300 and CBR300’s way really soon.
